Nigeria judge grants bail to defendant in Pfizer drug-study case

A judge granted bail Friday to a defendant in Nigeria's court battle against Pfizer over decade-old drug tests, alleged by the government to have killed and crippled young subjects.

The man, Segun Donguro, was arrested after a warrant was issued Dec. 24 seeking his detention for failing to appear in court. The case is a $2 billion suit against the company for its drug trial in Nigeria in 1996. Two other Pfizer employees were also named in the warrant, but have not been arrested.

On Friday, a judge said Donguro, who helped administer the 1996 tests of a possible treatment for meningitis, could go free on bail of about US$40,000.
