WASHINGTON, July 1 -- The U.S. Department of Justice's U.S. Attorney's office for the Eastern District of Louisiana issued the following press release:
JASON APPELDORN, 33, of Gray, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court today before U. S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon to felonies involving the sexual exploitation of children, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten today.
According to documents filed in federal court, APPELDORN was previously convicted of Possession of Child Pornography on March 16, 2005. On March 5, 2009, U. S. Probation Officers, while conducting a search of APPELDORN's residence, determined that APPELDORN knowingly used his cell phone to search for, download, and save images of child pornography. APPELDORN was found to be in possession of approximately 8 images depicting the sexual victimization of children.
As a result of the evidence found by probation officers, APPELDORN was arrested by agents from the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and officers from U. S. Probation. APPELDORN was remanded to the custody of the U. S. Marshal.
Because of APPLEDORN'S previous conviction, he faces an enhanced mandatory minimum sentence of ten (10) years imprisonment and a possible maximum of twenty (20) years. In addition, APPELDORN will be placed on supervised release for a period of not less than five (5) years and up to life and will be required to register as a sex offender.
Sentencing in this matter are scheduled for October 8, 2009 at 2:00 P.M before U. S. District Eldon E. Fallon. APPELDORN remains in federal custody.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
