FED: Rare snake faces unncertain future academic

A researcher says an endangered snake could lose its battle for survival in the Royal
National Park because visitors are destroying its rocky habitats.

Southern Cross University researcher Dr ROSS GOLDINGAY says the park, south of Sydney,
is one of the primary locations for the rare Broad-Headed Snake.

Dr GOLDINGAY says conservation reserves are commonly viewed as safe havens for endangered
species but a study has shown significant habitat destruction by park visitors.

He says it's an offence to either interfere with fauna habitat or rock formations in
the Park and he's blamed the disturbances on a combination of hikers, vandals and reptile
collectors.
