QLD:Flood victim's new Grantham home arrives

By Darren Cartwright

BRISBANE, Aug 1 AAP - Grantham flood victims Dan Walmsley and Mary King will soon have
a house they can call home again.

All they need are tradesman to complete the installation of their "new" Sorrenson St abode.

It arrived on Monday aboard two semi-trailers in the southeast Queensland town devastated
by floodwaters in January.

The previous dwelling they'd built from scratch was only a week from completion when
it ended up in the local creek as a torrent of water roared through the Lockyer Valley
town on January 10.

Grantham at the time was described as a war zone, with 10 people confirmed either dead
or missing.

Now, Dan and Mary are the fortunate recipients of one of three homes sourced by Hannah's
Foundation, a drowning prevention, awareness and support charity set up for for Grantham
flood victims.

"I think for me it's just overwhelming and for Don it's not really real yet until we
get that front door key and live in it," Ms King said.

"But right now we need to have people help us do the little bits and pieces to make
this dream a reality."

The home was donated courtesy of house relocation company McDonald House Haulage.

Hannah's Foundation spokeswoman Kat Plint told AAP the house needed to be wired, plumbed
and have a "light" exterior makeover.

"We need electricians, plumbers, painters and plasterers, and apprentices are more
than welcome," Ms Plint said.

"We are working with BSA (Building Services Authority) and Apprenticeships Qld to help
get more new home owners the support they need.

"This house has great character and its future residence in Grantham will no doubt
give Don and Mary a wonderful home that they can enjoy with their children and grandchildren."

The other houses Hannah's Foundation has sourced are in storage.

They will be delivered in the next couple of months and another call-out for volunteer
tradies can be expected.

Anyone, including handymen, wanting to donate their services, can contact the foundation
on 07 5465 2000.

Fed: Homebuyers shunning fixed rate mortgages

Fed: Homebuyers shunning fixed rate mortgages

By Colin Brinsden, Economics Correspondent

CANBERRA, April 6 AAP - Home buyers have all but given up on fixed-rate home loans
in anticipation of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) cutting interest rates further,
banker and insurer Suncorp says.

The RBA holds its monthly board meeting on Tuesday and economists are split on whether
the central bank will hold the cash rate steady for another month or reduce it by a further
25 to 50 basis points.

Even if it doesn't cut the rate this month, financial markets are betting on further
reductions this year towards two per cent.

The cash rate stands at a 45-year low of 3.25 per cent.

"The fact that our customers are typically continuing to favour the variable rate option
indicates that they seem to be largely betting that the official interest rate will fall
further," Suncorp's general manager of banking Terry Wasmund said.

New figures released by Suncorp on Monday showed that only one per cent of its customers
took out a fixed rate home loan in February compared with 42 per cent a year earlier.

"We haven't seen a market like this for a very long time," Mr Wasmund said.

Still, mortgage broker the Loan Market Group said now was the time to be considering
a fixed-rate mortgage.

It says fixed rates have already started moving up, even though official rates are
expected to be lower this year.

Fixed-rate mortgages are based on wholesale market interest rates, while standard variable
rates are usually led by official interest rate decisions.

"Many consumers are unaware that the variable rates move differently to fixed rates
and by the time variable rates have bottomed they have missed the best opportunity to
fix," Loan Market Group executive director John Kolenda said.

"If you are able to secure a great fixed rate in the high four per cent or low five
per cent range for a three-to-five-year period then you should seriously look at it."

Mr Wasmund said Suncorp's standard variable rate stands at 5.9 per cent, while a three-year
fixed rate sits at 6.39 per cent.

Someone taking out a $250,000 mortgage over 25 years would be paying an extra $904
per annum to fix.

"But the benefit is they do have some surety in terms of how much they have to find
each month and some protection in the form of a reasonable safety net should interest
rates rise again," he said.

He said it is a different situation for customers with existing fixed-rate loans as
they need to assess whether break fees to exit their loan are going to be recouped in
the longer term if official interest rates keep falling and stay low.

"If they chose to move to a lower variable rate, the savings wouldn't actually kick
in until they'd covered the break fee associated with exiting their current loan, so interest
rates would have to stay low for a considerable amount of time for any advantage to be
realised."

Mr Swan urged the other major banks to do the same, minutes after the central bank

"This is a vital rate cut ... delivered at a time when all our joint efforts are directed

"For these reasons the government does expect the banks to pass this on in full."

Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg told state parliament the government should scrap

"This whole process has been a shambles from day one.

"They've now locked Queenslanders in on a process that is not getting the best outcome.

FED: New submarines to protect Australia as region heats up

Defence experts say Australia must invest billions of dollars into a new submarine
fleet and air force .. because the Pacific region is becoming more competitive.

Defence minister JOEL FITZGIBBON has ordered the planning of a next generation of submarines
as part of the long-term defence strategy.

He's told News Limited .. there's widespread agreement submarines provide a vital military
capability for Australia.

And defence experts agree and say at least 25 billion dollars should be invested over
the next 20 years to replace the current Collins class submarines .. to be retired in
2025.

Professor ROSS BABBAGE .. chairman of the Kokoda Foundation .. says Australia must
prepare for greater regional competition as countries like China .. Indonesia .. and India
grow economically and politically.

NEIL JAMES from the Defence Association also says it's important to plan for the submarines
now so it doesn't cost too much to replace the older fleet in about 15 years time.

Australia's only Adelaide-based submarine manufacturer is touted to build the new submarine
fleet .. which is rumoured to use nuclear energy.

Fed: Poll shows scare campaigns not working: Swan

CANBERRA, April 3 AAP - The latest Newspoll results prove the scare campaigns and personal
attacks on Labor party members have not been successful, opposition treasury spokesman
Wayne Swan says.

A Newspoll published in The Australian newspaper today shows the government had clawed
back four points on a two-party preferred basis, but is still losing 43 to 57.

Prime Minister John Howard is also still trailing Kevin Rudd as preferred prime minister,
despite regaining two points to be 38 to 48.

Mr Swan said the change was not surprising.

"I don't think that anyone in the Labor party believes that these sorts of leads last
forever and they most certainly won't," Mr Swan told ABC radio today.

"I guess the surprising thing is that the scare campaign and the personal attacks haven't
had much of an impact."

Mr Swan said elections in Australia are always close contests.

"The next election will be like that, except on this occasion there's a much stronger
mood for change out there running against the government," he said.

"The task for the Labor party is to continue to put forward strong, positive alternatives
in policy areas like the economy, keeping downward pressure on interest rates and climate
change and to defend ourselves against scare campaigns and personal attacks from the Liberals,"

Mr Swan said.

Tas: Rescue operation under way for trapped miners

By Robyn Grace and Catherine Best

BEACONSFIELD, Tasmania, April 26 AAP - Rescuers today prepared to send a remote-controlled
camera underground to try to determine the fate of three miners trapped after an earthquake
triggered a rockfall at a Tasmanian gold mine.

Grave fears are held for the three miners at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine, about 40km
north-west of Launceston, who have not been heard from since the rockfall about 9.30pm
(AEST) last night.

As their families endured an agonising wait for news, rescuers said a video camera
would be sent into the blocked shaft to assess the damage.

"The situation is still dangerous to the point where we are unable to access the immediate
area," resident mine manager Matthew Gill told reporters.

He said rescue crews were doing "everything possible" to save the three men, who were
working about a kilometre underground when trapped.

"We are currently rigging up a machine with a camera to go in remotely to get closer to the site.

"There is a second line of action which is the drilling of a second drive but that
will take some time ... our priority is, in all efforts, in the search and rescue and
we are doing everything possible."

Mr Gill also revealed the men did not have access to emergency rescue chambers, but
added: "That isn't an issue at this point in time."

He declined to speculate about their options for survival inside the blocked mine shaft.

Eleven other miners were underground at the time of the incident but managed to scramble
to safety.

At least one of the three trapped miners is a local man. Todd Russell is a keen Australian
Rules footballer aged in his early 30s.

Mr Gill said all of the trapped men had been employed with the mine for several years
and were experienced miners.

West Tamar Mayor Barry Easther said Beaconsfield was a small community and the residents
would rally around families affected by the accident.

"They're coping reasonably well but it's very difficult when you're just waiting," he said.

Tasmanian Resources Minister Bryan Green said a full investigation would be launched
into the accident.

He said the men had been drilling in preparation for managed explosions at the time
of the collapse.

"The (mine) management have indicated it is a significant fall. It is going to require
some time to get to where the work was underway," Mr Green said.

He said the collapse was an "absolute tragedy".

"I am obviously concerned for the families of those people that are trapped in the
mine at the moment. Of course our heart goes out to them ... and their families and the
community of the West Tamar," Mr Green said.

A close friend of one of the trapped men said his family had gathered together and
were anxiously waiting for news.

"We have all got our fingers crossed at the moment. But he is a big boy and if anyone
will get out of there, he will," said the woman, who asked not to be named.

Geoscience Australia confirmed a minor earthquake of 2.1 magnitude occurred in the
area of the mine collapse last night.

A local resident described the earthquake as frightening.

"I thought, what the heck was that," Beaconsfield resident Wendy Garwood told ABC Radio.

"We usually have some mine blasting, but it was nothing like this.

"My china cabinet just rattled, and the floor underneath, it felt like the explosives
were right under my house."

The mine is the town's largest employer.

Mr Burr said it was the first incident at the century-old mine since it reopened in 1995.

The Australian Workers' Union (AWU) said it would conduct its own investigation into
working conditions at the mine.

The push for light performance. (Diamond Notes).(GemEx Systems offers $1.5 million in advertising to retail jewelers)(Brief Article)

GemEx Systems of Mequon, Wis., is offering $1.5 million in advertising to a select number of retail jewelers who will promote its new Guide Light Performance Analysis diamond report. The GemEx BrillianceScope measures the light performance of a diamond, allowing for a "what you see is what you get" analysis report.

"[The report] does two things," says Bob DuBois, GemEx vice president of marketing. "First, the consumer instantly becomes clear on the `cut' issue. Second, the presentation regarding `cut' goes back to discussing light performance as they actually see it and imagine it, vs. talking about a whole lot of numbers and letters.

"As long as I've been in the industry, I've heard that `the romance is gone,' and `all they are talking about are numbers,' "he adds. "When consumers see a technology that's easy to understand and that deals with how light performs in a diamond, they gravitate to it quickly. Now there's a mental picture of how beautiful the diamond will actually be."

GemEx will engage in heavy cooperative advertising with retailers to draw consumers into stores. The campaign will include press releases; television, radio, and print ads; and point-of-sale counter cards.

About 200 retail outlets will have BrillianceScope Viewers or, in a few cases, BrillianceScopes. Diamonds with Light Performance reports can be acquired from traditional wholesalers who stock them, or by sending existing inventory to be examined. Each Light Performance report can be electronically retrieved, so a wholesaler can send the report via the Internet to a retailer who is interested in purchasing a diamond with a report. The retailer can decide whether the stone is right for his store before the diamond is shipped.

For more information on the new Light Performance co-op ad campaign, contact Bob DuBois at GemEx Systems, Mequon, Wis., (888) 292-1191, e-mail: bobd@gemex.com.--GR

Research from Drexel University Provide New Insights into Urban Technology.

According to the authors of a study from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, "Capturing the flow of information between cities is a challenging task. Historically, flow analyses have focused on goods, capital, and people, all of which can serve as proxies for estimating the volume of spatial interaction between places."

"However, with the advent of the Internet and its ability to both facilitate and accelerate the exchange of information, it is somewhat surprising that so few studies have examined the geographical characteristics of Internet flows. Aside from the initial challenges associated in acquiring network flow data, there are additional constraints inhibiting such efforts, including privacy concerns, the geographic rectification of flows, and the ability to manage and visualize massive datasets. The purpose of this paper is to outline a basic methodology for capturing Internet flow data and to provide a brief empirical analysis of these data for the Internet2 network in the United States," wrote T.H. Grubesic and colleagues, Drexel University.

The researchers concluded: "Results suggest that asymmetries exist between ingress and egress connectivity and flows throughout the United States."

REDMOND MAN SENTENCED TO 48 MONTHS FOR PIPE BOMB AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.

EUGENE, Ore. -- The following information was released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives:

Brian Keith Fabbrini, 33, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Michael R. Hogan to serve two sentences of 48 months in prison for possessing child pornography and an unregistered pipe bomb. Fabbrini was also ordered to serve a 10- year term of supervised release following his release from prison. While on supervised release, Fabbrini must abide by a number of conditions, including restrictions on his access to computers, electronic devices, and the internet. He will also be prohibited from residing or being within 100 yards of places where minor children congregate.

The investigation arose when an Oregon Department of Justice (ODOJ) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force undercover investigation found Fabbrini's computer using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program to make videos of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct available to others to download over the internet. While executing a search warrant on November 26, 2008 at Fabbrini's residence in Redmond, Oregon, investigators found an unregistered metal pipe bomb and blasting caps inside of an unlocked cabinet in the garage of the residence, where minor children also resided. The Oregon State Police Arson and Explosives Section rendered the pipe bomb safe, and the Explosives Technology Branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed the device to be an improvised explosive weapon capable of causing property damage, injury and death. A forensic examination of Fabbrini's computer, performed by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, revealed 20 movie files depicting children, including prepubescent minors, engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

This case was investigated by the ICAC task force with assistance from the Redmond Police Department, Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Bend Police Department, Oregon State Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney AnneMarie Sgarlata handled the prosecution.

The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood.(Books)(Book review)

Byline: Danny Heitman

"The past folds accordion-like into the present," James Gleick writes in The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood, his sweeping survey of how humans use information and how this practice, in turn, has shaped humanity. Gleick's book defies easy summary, but its most abiding insight is, in fact, its reminder that the so-called "Information Age" of the present has deep historical parallels dating back to the dawn of time.

Gleick concludes that information, now seen as the currency of the modern world, has always been the animating force of the planet, though in ways we have only recently begun to understand.

"We can now see that information is what our world runs on: the blood and the fuel, the vital principle," he tells readers. "It pervades the sciences from top to bottom, transforming every branch of knowledge.... Now even biology has become an information science, a subject of messages, instructions, and code. Genes encapsulate information and enable procedures for reading it in and writing it out. Life spreads by networking. The body itself is an information processor.

9 books Bill Gates thinks you should read

Memory resides not just in brains but in every cell.... DNA is the quintessential information molecule, the most advanced message processor at the cellular level - an alphabet and a code, 6 billion bits to form a human being."

The idea of the bit as a fundamental building block of information came from Claude Shannon, the man behind the theory of the book's subtitle. Gleick credits Shannon with creating the conceptual framework that allowed today's information economy to emerge.

Gleick's treatment of Shannon is the most technically challenging part of the book. E.B. White once warned that analyzing humor was like dissecting a frog, leaving one with an array of parts that seemed only dimly related to the subject. Gleick's narrative sometimes feels equally reductionist, particularly in the passages about Shannon, but "The Information" isn't always or even usually concerned with dry empiricism.

There's sheer pleasure in these pages, too, with many chapters resembling a Victorian curio cabinet, an intimate universe of items that have lively and unlikely connections. Gleick, who approvingly describes his hero Shannon as someone who "gathered threads like a magpie," proves quite a magpie himself, crafting a story that includes not only Aeschylus but AT&T, as well as Beethoven and Bell Labs, Darwin and domain names, "The Iliad," the telephone, and "The Great Soviet Encyclopedia."

And although he deals with what can seem like grimly mechanical formulations of information theory, Gleick is also alert to the human touch. In an opening chapter on the use of African drums to communicate across vast differences, for example, he notes that drummers aspired to something more richly complicated than the bare transmission of facts. Instead of simply saying "Come back home," drummers would tap out a poetic exhortation:

"Make your feet come back the way they went,/ make your legs come back the way they went,/ plant your feet and legs below,/ in the village which belongs to us."

Gleick's study of drums sets the stage for a continuing theme of the book - namely, the way that information history has been a point of intersection for science and the humanities. He notes the senior Oliver Wendell Holmes's 19th-century skepticism about the prospect of mechanical calculating machines, asserting that they could be nothing more than a "satire" of human intelligence. Think of it as an earlier version of the recent debate inspired by a computer's victory on the game show "Jeopardy!."

In his final chapters addressing contemporary information overload, Gleick reminds readers that here, too, there's not much new under the sun.In 1621, reports Gleick, the Oxford scholar Robert Burton complained that in the wake of the printing press, there was simply too much news and literature to keep up with. Here, again, is Gleick: "As the printing press, the telegraph, the typewriter, the telephone, the radio, the computer, and the Internet prospered, each in its turn, people said, as if for the first time, that a burden had been placed on human communication: new complexity, new detachment, and a frightening new excess."

Gleick's book has been described as "ambitious," an earnest compliment that, in publishing circles, is often synonymous with back-breaking heft and ponderous pronouncement.

"The Information" is a long read, and as Gleick himself concedes, "When information is cheap, attention becomes expensive."

But as Gleick also points out, "information is not knowledge, and knowledge is not wisdom."

The information glut endures, but wisdom like Gleick's is harder to come by. That alone makes "The Information" worth the effort.

Permeo Base5 Certified for RSA SecurID Authentication.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Permeo Base5 Integrates with Industry-Leading Authentication Technology to Protect Critical Information and Applications Accessed from Remote Locations

Permeo Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of on demand information security solutions for the enterprise, today announced that Permeo Base5 has received certification for RSA SecurID Authentication, an authentication platform for enterprise networks. The combined solution of industry standard authentication and Permeo Base5's information security features gives Permeo customers a more secure approach to providing employees, partners and customers remote access to critical corporate applications.

The changing needs of businesses require the extension of corporate resources to remote employees and business partners via a growing number of unmanaged devices such as employee home computers, partner and customer computers, and Internet kiosks. As a result, a reliable level of user authentication and strong endpoint security measures are imperative to prevent sensitive information leakage at controlled and uncontrolled endpoints.

RSA Security's authentication solutions remain an industry standard for organizations looking to protect their key business data assets. RSA SecurID Authentication employs multiple components to provide a two-factor authentication platform for enterprise networks. Users authenticate themselves to the network with a password or PIN as well as an "authenticator," which is typically a hardware token. This method offers a more reliable level of user authentication than reusable passwords to help positively identify users before they interact with mission-critical data and applications. With Permeo Base5, once a user is authenticated, on demand remote access and endpoint security features are enabled including keylogger detection, information controls, browser security, malware protection, and host integrity checks.

"The ability to positively identify a user and ensure that the information they access remotely is not compromised at the endpoint are both crucial factors to consider as enterprises continue to extend the network perimeter," said Mark Elliott, vice president of product management at Permeo Technologies. "As Permeo Base5 now seamlessly operates with the RSA SecurID Authentication platform, organizations have peace of mind knowing that they can grant employees and partners remote access to the corporate applications they need while satisfying compliance and information protection requirements."

About Permeo

Permeo Technologies, a leading provider of on demand information security solutions, provides a flexible remote access and comprehensive information protection solution that safely extends corporate applications to remote users, business partners and customers. Our approach minimizes information leakage vulnerabilities at the endpoint through a cost-effective easy-to-use solution. Since 2001, Permeo has helped more than 250 of the world's largest companies secure their information and protect their assets beyond the borders of their enterprise. Wine and Beverage Tote-Cooler; `The Sleepover Cookbook'; Grey Poupon yellow mustard.

Byline: Renee Enna

HAVE WINE, WILL TRAVEL

We liked the features on California Innovations' attractive Wine and Beverage Tote-Cooler, with an insulated interior that holds a bottle of wine, two side pockets for wine glasses (plastic ones are included) and a front pocket that holds a corkscrew and combination pourer/wine stopper (both included). The tote has a handle as well as a shoulder strap and comes with its own reusable ice pack. It costs $29 by mail through the Wine Enthusiast, 800-356-8466.

SLEEPOVER SNACKS

We liked the upbeat approach in "The Sleepover Cookbook" (Sterling, $9.95), by Hallie Warshaw. The book is written for kids old enough to cook in the kitchen (though an adult should always be around to help and/or supervise). The recipes _ such as hot taco dip, biscuit-bite pizza and brownie sundaes _ will appeal to younger cooks and are clearly written and easy to execute. The book is available at bookstores, or online at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com.

GOING DOWNSCALE

Grey Poupon, famous for its Dijon mustard, has taken on the ballpark crowd with a yellow variety. Most of us liked the tangy mustard, with a pleasant sharpness supplied by mustard seed, turmeric and paprika. But one taster strongly objected to another of its ingredients: high-fructose corn syrup. Sugar, he maintains, does not belong in yellow mustard. Since it's a ballpark _ you make the call. A 10-ounce jar costs around $3.

World Cup BA worker grounded.(News)

Byline: JAMES KELLY

A GREEDY British Airways worker has been suspended for trying to make a fortune out of England's World Cup players as they returned home from Australia.

Baggage handler Neil Cook grabbed souvenirs - including three shirts signed by the team and each of the players' autographed BA boarding passes - items experts claim could rocket in value to pounds 250,000.

Despite an exhausting 20-hour flight from Sydney, the players, including Jonny Wilkinson, skipper Martin Johnson and try-scorer Jason Robinson, happily signed the items.

Experts say one of the shirts could be worth pounds 60,000 in years to come, with Wilkinson's pass fetching pounds 10,000 and Johnson's pounds 8,000.

Cook planned to line his own pockets by selling the lot on Internet site Ebay.

As hundreds of bids for the 15 lots started mounting up, the 31-year-old - who used his job's privileged access rights to mingle with the players - dreamed of raising enough cash to put down a deposit on a new house.

But then his furious bosses at Heathrow got wind of the racket.

Yesterday he was grounded at home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. And he has been forced to withdraw all the items from the Internet site.

As a company inquiry got under way, a BA source said: "We don't expect our staff to behave like this. One or two signatures for the kids is fine - but selling them in this fashion is not on."

Getting back to gaming.

By Melissa Bell

Jay Gatsby would have appreciated the surreptitious way they achieved success.

Last month, friends Charlie Hoey and Pete Smith uploaded "The Great Gatsby" video game to their Web site with the explanation that they had found a dusty, gray Nintendo cartridge in a garage sale box and reprogrammed it to work online.

The

game had all the hallmarks of a Nintendo classic: The blocky art, the strangely hypnotic music of beeps and bops, and a humorous story line following Nick Calloway, narrator of F.

Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, as he sashays through a 1920s party battling flappers, butlers and drunks.

In just over a month, a million people had logged on to the friends' Web site to play.

As it turned out, Nintendo hadn't created the "Great Gatsby" game.

Hoey, a developer, and Smith, an editor at Nerve.com, had made the whole story up.

They had designed the game themselves over the course of a year as homage to the Nintendo Entertainment System 8-bit video games of the 1980s that they had grown up loving.

There has always been a niche fan club dedicated to the original NES games, which were played using a television console.

But recently the old games and some newly created ones are proliferating on the web with the availability of Flash technology, which makes it easy to replicate the 8-bit look and feel.

Art projects and musical tributes are also flooding the Internet.

Just check out Swedish band Rymdreglage's Lego-made music videos as the epitome of 8-bit cool, the movie "Scott Pilgrim vs.

the World" for 8-bit gone mainstream, and Eightbit.me, a location-based iPhone app that turns you into a video game avatar.

Google showed how huge a demand for these games can be when last May the search engine turned its logo into a playable version of Pac-Man to celebrate the game's 30th anniversary.

People spent so much time on the site that some companies opted to block Google for the day to keep their employees on task.

RescueTime, a software tracking company, estimated people spent a collective 4.8 million hours on the Pac-Man game in one day.

The Google doodle designer that created the game, Marcin Wichary, said the old game was "deceptively straightforward, carefully hiding [its] complexity under the hood."

At a time when video games boast all sorts of design bells and whistles, the 8-bit Nintendo technology, once viewed as state-of-the-art, has a nostalgic appeal.

(The term 8-bit refers to the processor used in the early generation of home computers and is discernible by its pixelated, block-shaped style.) The original game creators had few materials to work with there were only 56 colors in the original Nintendo palette but they still managed a huge range of visual styles, creating whole, elaborate universes for the first generation of computer-raised children to enjoy.

In the old, flat two-dimensional video game world, it's the details that delight.

For example, in the "Great Gatsby" game, check out the shocked expression on the butler's face after he's hit by a bowler hat.

"A lot of us look fondly at these old games now because they're cozy mementos from childhood," Hoey wrote on his personal blog.

"But many decades from now people will look with a much deeper affection.

They'll see these games as early artifacts of a species that was just beginning to teach its machines to tell stories."

Fitzgerald might be right.

We do beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

But sometimes the past can be a pretty fun place to be.
